BMA Patient Information Awards
We have recently had two projects for the British Heart Foundation commended at the British Medical Association's Patient Information Awards.
The first series of books explaining Inherited heart conditions – cover illustration by Aude van Ryn below – were commended.
The Living with a healthy heart booklet, aimed at disabled people, was highly commended too.
The awards recognise quality in written patient information leaflets and small booklets, taking navigation, accessibility, and layout & design into account – a great award to be up for.
Massive thanks and congratulations go to Cardiac Nurse, Cathy Ross, at the BHF who project managed both, and whose passion made these so successful.

Pocket map
The lovely people at Arts Council England, London wanted a map to introduce the staff moving to their offices in Westminster to the local area. We designed this fold-out map which fits in a pocket-sized slip case so it can be easily carried around. As with the moving card, we hand-rendered the illustrations for a more personal feel.
Printed and finished digitally in a limited edition of 80 by our new friends over at New Perspective.

Crafts Council identity
A new identitiy that we have designed for the Crafts Council was unveiled last night at the private view of New Designers in Islington.
Firing Up is a national programme in ceramics, its aim is to raise the profile of ceramics in education, inspire learners and 're-fire' kilns in schools.
We typeset the name very simply, which is then applied to clay in the form of a stamp, referencing the marks used in ceramics.
We'll have more applications of this to show soon. Below is the front of the flyer.

The new Artie!
Following the British Heart Foundation’s Artie Beat Club vote, we are pleased to announce that a new Artie Beat character has been chosen. Eugene and Louise’s heart-shaped Artie was the most popular amongst the children and is now being developed to appear throughout all marketing materials, including newsletters, membership packs, posters and story books. We will be designing a fresh new look for all of these across the campaign, working with the excellent Eugene and Louise, through their agency Eye Candy, to allow Artie to become an informative way of teaching young children about heart disease and the work the British Heart Foundation does. Watch out for more work to come.

Work Update
After a very busy few months we've recently had a whole load of projects come to fruition. We are very excited to announce that we have been asked to work on a project for the Royal Mail. It's a top secret, self-destruct in 10 seconds type thing at the moment. But when we can, we will announce more.

Striking Women exhibition
The exhibition we designed for the University of Leeds, showing at The Women’s Library, has been extended and is now open until the end of March.
We are just finishing a website to document the whole exhibition, so that the research and stories will go on beyond the life of the exhibition itself. Lookout for the launch of the website very soon.

The Music Exchange website
Having last year designed a logo and identity for The Music Exchange – a not-for-profit music shop run by Nottingham based homelessness charity Framework – we are currently designing the website for them to fit in line with the rest of the brand. It should be live by the end of Feburary so check back then to see the result.

London to Brighton bike ride
The BHF London to Brighton Bike Ride attracts 35,000 entries, with 27,000 lucky (lucky?!) people riding the 54 grueling miles, raising an incredible £4.5m on the way. We took inspiration from these numbers in the design of the supporting materials, highlighting the efforts involved in raising this money, and focussing on what it eventually goes towards.
You can apply on the BHF website from 2 March 2010

Artie Beat
The British Heart Foundation came to us last year, asking for our help in developing their popular children’s character Artie Beat. We spent a great deal of time researching illustrators to try to find the right look and feel of a new “Artie”, while still maintaining the essence of the original, which made it so appealing to our target audience. Finally we narrowed down the selection to 3: Lee Cosgrove, Lucia Gaggiotti and Eugene and Louise. Here are their wonderful illustrations, respectively. These will now be presented to the Artie Beat Club, who will decide on their favourite by vote.

Work update
This last week has seen a whole load of work come back from the printers in to the MARC&ANNA letterbox – it has been very exciting indeed. Pete and Repeat
Pete and Repeat is the new exhibition opening at 176 Gallery, for which we've done the identity and all the supporting marketing materials for.
Each of the 36 artists exhibiting uses 'strategies of repetition' in their work, an idea we've carried into the design of the identity. All posters and invites are cut from the same sheets, in which the title has been overprinted on top of the repeated exhibition details – an exercise in the process of repetition.
Check our work section soon for the whole project.
The exhibition opens on 17th September and further details can be found here www.projectspace176.com/home/

Faster, Higher
After a whole year in development, Faster Higher – our book for the artist Susan Pui San Lok, commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella – has gone off to print. Without giving too much away at this stage it has been a great project for us to work on, working with an open minded artist, exploring ways of continuing the concepts of the work in to the format of the book.
Check back soon to see the finished piece.

We have been exceptionally busy this last month – but our first project for the Arts Council is very nearly complete. Last month Jo Metson Scott shot musicians playing 'air' instruments for us, and above is a taster of the end result.
Seven more of these will be following shortly to complete a lovely poster campaign for Take it away.

This year has been manic so far, and we're still working on lots of new jobs, which is great.
Projects we're working on at the moment include a book to document susan pui san lok's video installation this summer at the BFI, commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella; the Annual Review for the Energy Saving Trust ; a campaign for Nottingham-based homelessness charity Framework and a new project for Brighton-based PR agency Man Bites Dog.

Youth Forum Presents...

We recently designed an identity for, and in conjuction with, the National Portrait Gallery's Youth Forum — a group that meets twice a month at the Gallery to discuss and be involved in upcoming events.
We have just designed a poster and flyer for an event put on by the Youth Forum themselves to celebrate the launch of their new identity, both shown above.
We'll have more on this project soon.

We love craft

For the Origin Craft Fair we designed and produced 3,000 packs of badges, to appear in Don't Panic bags around the city, leading up to the start date on 7 October.
Many shifts around the meeting table, and with a lot of help from a friend, we eventually got all the packs made up!

Between the Covers

The first piece of print for the upcoming exhibition at the Women's Library has just arrived back — the programme of events, cover shown.
We commissioned Jo Metson Scott to shoot three women reading magazines from different eras, in a hair salon. This will be used as the main image across all promotional print.
We also designed a logo for the exhibition, made up of found lettering from many different magazines. This lettering will be used throughout exhibition graphics, which will are to be designed over the coming months.

Tutoring at the National Portrait Gallery
We have been invited to work with the National Portrait Gallery’s Youth Forum in the coming week.
The Forum is a group of about 10 young people aged 14—21 who act as an advisory panel for the Gallery. Their aim is to come up with a logo that will sit alongside the Gallery’s, and we have been asked to advise on how to create one from research they've conducted themselves. Hopefully in the long-term we'll work with them to create a brand identity and literature for them to use.

MARC&ANNA new website

Welcome to our new website. We hope it's nicer and easier to use than the last one. There's lots more work here, and the images are much LARGER. We can update it regularly, so no static website for months on end.
We'll be adding much more news in the near future, but for now we'll let you get on and look through all the new work we have.

Laurence King Publishing

Following our previous two book projects for Laurence King we have been asked to design another, forthcoming, publication.

Kayt Jones

We have completed the website for LA based photographer Kayt Jones, daughter of i-D magazine founder Terry Jones. To make navigating easier, and to 'hide' the enormous number of images on the site, we split it into categories and then pages of contact sheets. These then open into large pop up books to show the full range of stunning images in each series.
This, along with the stationery, is now featured in our work section.

Cold Christmas
It's always a bit weird working on Christmas projects in July. Especially when it's been as hot as it has recently. But in one corner of the M&A studio it's all Christmas trees and baubles at the moment.
So when I cycled past this road sign recently I couldn't resist taking a photo. Half a mile down the road is White Christmas...

Mending Broken Hearts appeal
We were asked to design a progress-o-meter for the British Heart Foundation's Mending Broken Hearts campaign. It sits in the office, showing how much of the £50m target they have raised.
We designed a huge board, where they could fill in every £100,000 with a heart shaped sticker. A fully red heart means mission accomplished. For every £1m they get a gold sticker!

Collect 2010
Although most of the work at this year's Collect – at the Saatchi Gallery – was just slightly out of my price range, there was still some great stuff to see. A real mix. Although technically a craft fair, it pushes the boundaries of what craft is. There was traditional craft, but then there were objects that verged on fine art, and sculpture.
The stools below, for instance, by Oskar Zieta, look as if they are made from plastic – resembling half blown up beach balls. Amazingly, they are almost exactly that, only with steel instead of plastic. Ultra-thin sheets of steel are welded together around their edges and inflated under high-pressure, meaning that each seat is unique, but also very strong.

Also on show was the Clock Clock by Humans Since 1982. I've only ever seen photos of this, so to see – and hear – the whole thing move around is just brilliant. Great fun. You would need a decent sized room though.

More fine art/sculpture than design, this chair (by Caroline Broadhead) sat quietly and mostly unnoticed in the gallery. A normal wooden chair, it had red piping around some of it. If you stood in the right position it looked as if the chair was outlined in red. From elsewhere there were just bits of red. In a room of people I seemed to be the only one bobbing my head up and down, left and right, to get into the right position...

Somewhere between craft and fine art were a selection of 'extended' spoons by David Clarke, represented by Gallery S O. I could only find this picture online, but there were many different ones – all witty in their own way. A spoonful of sugar never tasted so good.

And finally, some work by Margherita Marchioni. A necklace made from tiny chunks of coloured pencil, which was great fun, and a light made from empty Yakult bottles! Lovely.

All images courtesy of the artists.

Decode at the V&A
Even though we rarely work in digital design it is always exciting to see what's out there. There are aesthetics and ideas that run through much of the work that we share, and then things that you would never have even considered possible!
This is well worth a visit. There's some great stuff on show, from the lovely Dandelion (below) by the always great Sennep to the incredible Weave Mirror by Daniel Rozin, which first makes you think 'how does that work' closely followed by 'how does that work?!'. And it's ony £5 entry!

Postcards from Argentina
.jpg)
Quite coincidentally, both Connie and myself took holidays to Buenos Aires throughout October and November. We both found time to visit the pretty port town of Colonia in Uruguay, and I escaped the city to stay in the beautiful Patagonia region further south. We both enjoyed an amazing adventure and fell in love with South America – from the beautiful architecture, spectacular scenery, delicious wine (and enormous steaks in my case!) to the antique markets, crazy drummers, street art and inspiring typography.
It has been fun to compare experiences and make the rest of the studio jealous. Though they did enjoy the selection of Argentinian biscuits we brought back between us (the malbec we kept for ourselves...).

The catalogue we designed for 176 / Zabludowicz Collection was launched at the VIP opening of Zoo Art Fair last night. It looked fantastic in all its glistening glory.
Worth a visit to see the work of a lot of up and coming artists, with a slightly more down to earth attitude than Frieze, and an uber cool bar run by Bistrotheque, of course.

Marc & The Spanners do dodgy Dodgeball
On Friday we headed to Finsbury Park for the British Heart Foundation All Agency Dodgeball Tournament. Dressed in fancy new kit (homemade ampersand transfers on Primark's finest) we were determined to be treated with respect by the other teams.

Some of the lightning fast and fearsome moves:

Sadly, once we reached the quarter finals things took a turn for the worse as the opponents looked as if they were handpicked for Globo Gym Cobras... even the top players were getting worried.

We won't give you a blow-by-blow account of the match (blow being the operative word), but we did come away with the best injuries of the day: Anna and Chris (though this picture does not quite do his black eye justice).

Joe did win "Best catch of the day" though, and true to form, we were the last agency standing (sort of) in the pub afterwards.

The Fourth Plinth
Having applied, and then forgotten, I was more than a little surprised to be selected as one of the 2400 participants in Antony Gormley's comission for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. Amazing.
And so, on a rainy, but warm, evening on Wednesday 29 July, I was hoisted to my spot, along with an unopened toolkit and newly purchased Malm, flat pack 3-drawer chest of drawers, from Ikea. One task, one hour, lots of cheering. It was possibly the shortest hour of my life. I've had job interviews less pressurised than this. But hell, what an hour.
Thanks to everyone that turned up to cheer me on ("30 minutes left!", "you've got 7 minutes per drawer!", "Marcy Marcy show us yer drawers!") and those that watched live in the dry, and sent so many fantastic comments. For those of you that missed, you can also watch, and listen to, the whole thing again at oneandother.co.uk
Would I do it again? God yeah. Only this time I'd get something with less screws...

At the end of a long day shooting musicians 'playing' air instruments for the Arts Council's Take it away scheme, we felt it would be wrong for all of us not to get involved and give it a go. Then again, maybe its a good thing that we didn't make the final selection!

Knit one, curl one...
On Friday we celebrated Connie's birthday (Happy Birthday Connie!) with a delicious studio breakfast cooked by Anna.
As it was her 25th we felt an 'over-sized' present was needed...
Apparently it's quite hard to knit with heavy 4ft long needles, but she's on track to finish all our thank-you jumpers by Christmas (2010).

but 6 hours of hard labour later (plus 7 eggs, 5 packs of butter, 4 boxes of icing sugar, 3 bags of flour, 2 fits of giggles, 1 knitting needle, a wooden palette, a telling off and some pink food die) and our slightly over-ambitious 4th birthday cake was complete!

British Heart Foundation poster
When we were asked to design a poster for the British Heart Foundation's new campaign we all jumped at the chance. When we realised we only had five days from briefing to artwork we winced, a little bit – but we do like a challenge.
Our solution didn't exactly fall into the 'simple' category, but it did get us away from the computers for a day or so, and the scalpels and coloured paper came out. Below are some of the photos of the shoot we set up, in our studio – the finished poster will follow in the next week.
The finished poster was shot by Thom Atkinson.

Badge ampersand

With our new ampersands freshly made into rubber stamps (see below), Joe made a reproduction of one of them out of some of the 6,000 badges we had made for the Origin Craft Fair. Sometimes Fridays are made for exactly this.
(The floor has since been mopped).

Thank you, dear voters!

A surprisingly large amount of people voted for their favourite ampersand in our competition (see below). The gorgeous numbers 2 and 3 came in joint first place and number 1 was also made into a stamp due to office politics (it was my favourite and I placed the order of the stamps, so there)
We are delighted with these addition to the M&A stamp collection. See these stamped on an invoice near you soon!

Which ampersand?
As you may know, we use several different rubber stamps to individually stamp ampersands to every item of our stationery.
We feel it is time for a new addition to the set, but which one? Help keep studio peace by voting for your favourite ampersand.
Vote here for your preferred number.

Eat, Drink & Be Messy
It was all go here in the studio in December with our Christmas tea towel project. Several hours of ironing, stitching, stamping and folding later and we got these in the post to mop up those notoriously messy Christmas dinners.

How much?
.jpg)
When we were asked to come up with a quick and cheap way of indicating how much money a group of people had saved through energy saving measures, for a photo call, we had to get thinking, fast.
Some foamboard, spray mount, a couple of scalpels and a lot of running about and cutting out later, and there we were!

Jean-Jacques Perrey

Jean-Jacques Perrey (above, left) is a bit of a legend here at MARC&ANNA — his track 'Groovy Leprechauns' playing us out of the door at the end of many a week.
So while Marc was attending the AV08 festival in Newcastle this weekend he couldn't resist dropping in to a lecture given by the great man himself. At 79, once promoter of the Ondioline – one of the very first synthesisers – and collaborator with the likes of Edith Piaf and Salvador Dali, this man has a lot to tell.
If you do one thing this week, make looking up this man's music a part of it.
Pushed into a very closed second was a great talk from Dick Mills, of the BBC Radiophonic workshop, and creator of the now classic original Dr Who title music.

Control | Print

We all went to the opening of Control | Print earlier this week, an exhibition at the SEA Gallery.
This is a research project sponsored by the Royal College of Art, investigating the world of digital print and its place in modern design. It's an interesting exhibition, with work contributions from Mark Wilson and Vaughn Oliver amongst others.
It's on until 8 November if you're in the area

H&M go ampersand
OK, so we're not the only company with an ampersand in our name. But we're also not the only company who likes them, obviously. Here is an ampersand broach, and an ampersand swing tag direct from Hennes & Mauritz.

I bet you have been dying to find out what our work space looks like. Well, here are some pictures. The ginger bloke is Marc and the brunette trying to hide behind her computer is Connie.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Following on from their award winning radio production of Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers' Guide To The Galaxy, our client —Above The Title Productions—has just completed the dramatisation of series 1 of his second creation—Dirk Gently.
Entitled Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency it goes to air on BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday 3rd October at 6.30pm. A star cast of HARRY ENFIELD, OLIVIA COLMAN and ANDREW SACHS surely has to beat Hollyoaks for the teatime slot.

Ampersand

Thanks to David from Blast who sent us this ampersand he found.
We have a collection of 3D and printed ampersands that we've collected over the past couple of years, so anyone who has one and wants to send us the physical version, or even just a photo, we'd be happy to put it up on our blog.

Connie photographing in the park
The sunny weather may seem like a distant memory now, but this picture was actually taken last week. This is Connie's set up for a shot she was taking for a project we are working on with the National Trust - Connie herself was precariously perched on the stool photographing the objects on the grass, footballs and frisbees narrowly missing her, and terrifying dogs running across the frame...

MARC&ANNA stuff
This is the new section of our website. To the left we'll give you updates on our work, and here we'll just post stuff that interests us. Or that we like. Or that makes us laugh. Or that we find, like this box flap.
