The Fourth Plinth

Having applied, and then forgotten, I was more than a little surprised to be selected as one of the 2400 participants in Antony Gormley’s comission for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. Amazing.

And so, on a rainy, but warm, evening on Wednesday 29 July, I was hoisted to my spot, along with an unopened toolkit and newly purchased Malm, flat pack 3-drawer chest of drawers, from Ikea. One task, one hour, lots of cheering. It was possibly the shortest hour of my life. I’ve had job interviews less pressurised than this. But hell, what an hour.

Thanks to everyone that turned up to cheer me on (“30 minutes left!”, “you’ve got 7 minutes per drawer!”, “Marcy Marcy show us yer drawers!”) and those that watched live in the dry, and sent so many fantastic comments. For those of you that missed, you can also watch, and listen to, the whole thing again at

Would I do it again? God yeah. Only this time I’d get something with less screws…
